With less than two years remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, preparations appear to be well underway.

As teams worldwide compete for a coveted spot in the expanded 48-team tournament, notable developments are emerging in the host nation.

Among them, Mauricio Pochettino and the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) are reportedly facilitating smoother travel for competing teams and their supporters.

According to a report by CW39, United Airlines, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, has introduced a new direct flight service between Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico (PXM).

Phil Griffith, Vice President of Airport Operations at United Airlines’ Houston hub, announced that the initiative “not only enriches our network but also strengthens Houston’s role as a vital link between the U.S. and Mexico.”

Griffith further expressed pride in the new route, emphasizing its impact on connectivity between the two countries.

“This service reflects our commitment to providing diverse travel options for our customers and supporting the growing demand for leisure and business travel to this vibrant destination,” he stated.

The renowned airline explained that the nonstop service to Puerto Escondido would be available year-round, operating once a week via United Express partner Mesa Airlines using Embraer 175 aircraft.

This initiative reinforces Houston’s standing as a critical gateway to Latin America. Scheduled to launch in April 2025, the service will commence just a year before Houston assumes its role as a host city for the 2026 World Cup.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire also expressed enthusiasm about the new route. “Adding Puerto Escondido to our growing list of international destinations is another win for Houston before the 2026 World Cup,” he remarked.

The mayor highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance the passenger experience, which include adding flights, upgrading airport infrastructure, and improving parking facilities. These measures aim to bolster business and tourism opportunities.

“As a primary gateway to Latin America, Houston must continue expanding access, which will drive economic growth,” Whitmire concluded.

Such efforts reflect America’s broader commitment to making the 2026 World Cup a remarkable experience for fans, players, and teams alike.

The new route is poised to benefit the USMNT and rival teams, as logistical challenges have often posed significant hurdles in high-stakes tournaments.

Travel fatigue and insufficient rest are perennial issues, and the vast geography of the U.S., coupled with venues in Canada and Mexico, adds to the complexity. However, this development marks a meaningful step toward alleviating these challenges.

In addition to aiding players and teams, the route will also make it easier for fans from Mexico and the U.S. to travel to Houston, offering more opportunities to support their favorite teams.

As these preparations take shape, anticipation builds for what else the U.S. might reveal to ensure the 2026 World Cup leaves a lasting impression.

This initiative signals that the nation is leaving no stone unturned in its mission to deliver an extraordinary tournament experience.
