Connor Zary scored in the third period to break a tie, and the Calgary Flames recovered after giving up a two-goal lead to win 3-2 against the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Matt Coronato and Igor Sharangovich each had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who are on a three-game winning streak. Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 27 saves, and MacKenzie Weegar had three assists.

Alexis Lafreniere and Will Cuylle scored for the Rangers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin matched his career high with 46 saves in a strong performance during an exciting goalie battle.

The Flames set a new season high with 49 shots on goal, surpassing their previous high of 37.

With the score tied and overtime looking likely, Zary put the Flames ahead at 10:35 of the third period. The second-year player fought off a check and took a shot from a tight angle, hitting the top corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Jonathan Huberdeau earned his 500th career assist on the play.

The Rangers made a late push to tie the game by pulling their goalie for an extra skater, but they couldn’t beat Wolf a third time.

The Flames started strong and were rewarded when Coronato scored at 7:26 of the first period. He received the puck, moved to near the faceoff dot, and fired a low shot through traffic and into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Sharangovich doubled the Flames’ lead with a power-play goal at 8:29 of the second period. He blasted a one-timer from the right circle, and the shot hit the post before going into the net for his third goal of the season.

The Rangers tied the game with two goals just 16 seconds apart late in the second period. Lafreniere scored at 16:37, pouncing on a rebound after Jacob Trouba’s shot was saved. It was Lafreniere’s eighth goal of the season.

Before that goal could even be announced, Cuylle scored his seventh goal of the season, deflecting K’Andre Miller’s point shot into the net.
