Before beginning his summer break, Donovan Mitchell informed the Cavaliers that he is content in Cleveland and excited about what lies ahead, particularly with the prospect of a new coach.

While Mitchell did not publicly discuss J.B. Bickerstaff or their relationship, it’s likely that the All-Star guard’s input influenced the team’s decision to change coaches despite the Cavaliers reaching the second round of the playoffs.

A day after Bickerstaff was let go, despite overseeing 99 wins over the past two seasons and guiding the Cavs back to relevance after LeBron James’ departure, president of basketball operations Koby Altman tried to justify the somewhat surprising decision.

Altman emphasized that Bickerstaff hadn’t done anything wrong but had reached his limit with a team reshaped by Mitchell’s arrival in a trade from Utah in 2022.

During a 35-minute media session, Altman commended Bickerstaff’s undeniable success but expressed the team’s desire to bring in a new leader who could propel them closer to winning a championship.

“We’re seeking someone with a fresh perspective, a different voice, and new ideas to help us progress,” Altman explained. “While we’ve achieved a lot in recent years, reaching the conference semifinals, we don’t want to become complacent. We believe we’re on the verge of something significant.”

Much of this optimism revolves around Mitchell, who has the option to sign a lucrative contract extension with the Cavs this summer. Altman met with the 27-year-old following Cleveland’s loss to Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Mitchell, who battled a left knee injury in the latter part of the regular season, missed the final two games against the Celtics due to a calf strain.

Altman noted that Mitchell’s feedback during their exit meeting was positive.

“Considering he’s had two of his best seasons here and experienced success, Donovan understands the direction we’re heading in,” Altman stated. “He’s expressed contentment with the team and our goals of winning a championship. His sincerity and commitment make us confident about our relationship with Donovan, though circumstances could change.”
