France midfielder Jordan Veretout has signed a two-year contract with Lyon, moving from French league rival Marseille.

Lyon announced late Wednesday that the transfer is worth four million euros ($4.4 million), with potential bonuses of up to three million euros and a 25% share of any future sale.

Veretout was not included in the plans of Marseille’s new coach, Roberto De Zerbi. Marseille aimed to offload Veretout during the transfer window but could not finalize a deal before the deadline.

Lyon acquired Veretout as a backup option and can register him for the Europa League.

French regulations permit clubs to add an extra player outside the regular transfer window if the player is joining a domestic team.

Veretout recently received disturbing messages online.

Trained in Nantes, the 31-year-old Veretout has also played in the English Premier League with Aston Villa and in Italy with Fiorentina and Roma. He has more than 500 professional appearances, with 66 goals and 63 assists.

Veretout won the Nations League with France in 2021 and also played in the 2022 World Cup.
