Freiburg has chosen former player Julian Schuster as its new coach to replace Christian Streich, who will step down at the end of the season after leading the team for more than 12 years.
This will be Schuster’s first time as head coach. He used to play as a midfielder for Freiburg and then took on various coaching roles within the club’s youth and assistant coaching teams under Streich.
Schuster expressed his excitement and acknowledged the challenge ahead. He believes in his ability to succeed but also understands the importance of staying humble and respecting the position.
Streich, who has been in charge since December 2011, leaves behind a significant legacy at Freiburg. Under his leadership, the club reached its first German Cup final in 2022 and made it to the Europa League last 16 twice, including this season.
Similar to Schuster, Streich also rose through the ranks within Freiburg’s coaching system. He has been associated with the club for 29 years, starting as an Under-19s coach in 1995. Currently, Freiburg holds the ninth position in the 18-team Bundesliga.
