Sean Murphy hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning, and Marcell Ozuna drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 11th as the Atlanta Braves came from behind to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday night. It was the Braves’ third consecutive victory.
In the 11th inning, Matt Olson started with an infield single, advancing Austin Riley — the automatic runner — to third base. Riley scored on Ozuna’s sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 5-4 lead.
Murphy’s home run off closer Paul Sewald tied the game at 3-3 in the ninth inning. Sewald had retired the first two batters before Eddie Rosario singled.
“I was just trying to make good contact, keep the momentum going,” Murphy said. “I hit the home run, but the main thing is to get on base and keep the inning alive. It worked out well for me and cleared the fence.”
Rosario had been called up from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day. He joined the Braves after being released by the Nationals, where he had a .183 batting average with seven home runs this season.
Sewald, who had converted his first 11 save opportunities this year, suffered his third consecutive blown save.
“You have to finish the inning,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “He made some good pitches to get into that position, but then a couple of mistakes. We made some errors, and good teams capitalize on those.
“A two-out home run doesn’t happen often,” he added. “But unfortunately, it’s been happening to us a bit lately.”
Both teams scored in the 10th inning on sacrifice flies by Ozzie Albies for the Braves and Geraldo Perdomo for the Diamondbacks.
Raisel Iglesias (1-1) earned the win with two hitless innings of relief, while Joe Jiménez pitched a scoreless 11th inning to secure his second save of the season.
