Garbiñe Muguruza, a two-time winner of major tennis tournaments, shared that she’s retiring from the sport at 30 years old after taking a break from playing.
“I believe it’s time for me to step away and start a new phase in my life,” said the former world No. 1 during a press conference in Madrid.
Muguruza secured victories against Serena Williams in the 2016 French Open final and Venus Williams in the 2017 Wimbledon final, making her the only player to beat both sisters in Grand Slam title matches.
Throughout her career, she won 10 titles and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2015 and the Australian Open in 2020.
Earning almost $25 million in prize money, she ranks 13th on the all-time list and concludes her career with a win-loss record of 449-238. Her most recent win was at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Muguruza hasn’t played since January 2023, when she announced an extended break, mentioning that spending time with loved ones was beneficial.
Born in Caracas and raised in Barcelona, Muguruza made history as the first Spanish woman to win a Grand Slam since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario at the 1998 French Open.
