Garrett Crochet had an impressive game, striking out a career-best 13 batters in seven innings. Andrew Vaughn hit a homer and brought in the deciding run in the 10th inning, helping the Chicago White Sox secure a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.
Chicago avoided a sweep in the four-game series but had to go into extra innings after Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run off closer Michael Kopech.
Rodríguez showed patience, waiting for the right pitch before hitting his sixth home run of the season.
Andrés Muñoz pitched the 10th inning for Seattle, allowing a single to Nicky Lopez, which moved Korey Lee from second base to third. Lee then scored on Vaughn’s groundout, giving Chicago the lead.
Tanner Banks closed the game, securing his second save of the season. The White Sox pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts, the most in a game for them since 2019.
Manager Pedro Grifol praised his team’s performance, despite only winning one game in the series.
Crochet was the standout player of the night, relying mainly on his fastball and cutter. He allowed just two hits and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the third time in his last four starts. Over those four games, Crochet has given up only five earned runs and struck out 42 batters.
His 13 strikeouts were the most by a White Sox pitcher since Lance Lynn’s 16 strikeouts against Seattle on June 18, 2023. Crochet’s only mistake came in the fifth inning when Tyler Locklear hit a changeup for his first career home run.
