Georgia Tech coach Brent Key stated on Tuesday that the status of injured quarterback Haynes King for Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech is still uncertain.
King missed last Saturday’s 31-13 defeat to No. 12 Notre Dame due to a right shoulder injury. Key mentioned last week that King was day-to-day and would be a game-time decision. Since King was not in uniform for the Notre Dame game, it seemed he wasn’t close to returning.
On Tuesday, Key firmly denied any claims that King has already been ruled out for the Virginia Tech game.
“Haynes is still day to day,” Key said. “There’s been zero call made on that, zero. OK. He’s day to day. Are we preparing the other guys to play? Yes. Have we ruled him out? No. You heard it from the horse’s mouth right there.”
Zach Pyron started his first game since his freshman season in 2022 and completed his first nine passes against Notre Dame. He ended the game with 20 completions out of 36 attempts for 269 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
“I was very proud of him for the way he went and performed,” Key said about Pyron. “And, you know, that’s not saying that 72 plays were perfect. I’m not saying that. … A few plays I might take back with him, but you learn from those mistakes and move on this week.”
King’s ability as both a runner and passer has been crucial for Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).
