New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito came out of his first start of the season with a sore throwing arm, and it’s unclear if he’ll play in Thursday’s game against the Cowboys in Dallas.

DeVito was not listed on Monday’s injury report, and coach Brian Daboll said he didn’t know about the injury to DeVito’s right arm until just before the team’s walkthrough practice on Tuesday.

Daboll said he was hopeful that DeVito would be able to play but also mentioned that backup Drew Lock would get some extra practice reps in the short session.

“If Tommy is good, then Tommy will be the guy,” Daboll said.

After playing on Sunday, the Giants (2-9) are preparing for the Cowboys (4-7) with walkthrough practices.

Following Tuesday’s workout, DeVito said his entire body was sore, including his neck. He planned to test his arm on Wednesday before the team traveled to Dallas.

“The plan is to play,” DeVito said. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll wake up feeling a little bit better after getting more treatment today. Looking forward to tomorrow.”

DeVito was given the starting position last week after coach Daboll benched Daniel Jones following five straight losses. Jones requested to be released on Friday, and after being cut, he cleared waivers on Monday and was free to explore other opportunities.

In the Giants’ 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DeVito completed 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards. He was sacked four times and briefly left the game in the fourth quarter after being hit hard following a throw.

Lock said he understood the uncertainty of being a backup quarterback. He noted that playing one play in the fourth quarter after DeVito got hurt was a first for him.

“Always got to be ready,” Lock said. “No matter what the week, no matter what the situation is, just playing like you’re going to go in there and play. My mindset didn’t change this week, and we’ll see how the rest of the week shakes out.”
