Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made three saves from penalty kicks against three different players on Sunday, helping his team secure a win with a penalty at the other end.
Girona defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in the Spanish league, thanks to Gazzaniga’s outstanding performance in goal.
The 32-year-old Argentine saved a first-half penalty from Athletic’s Alex Berenguer and then stopped two more in the second half from Inaki Williams and Ander Herrera after a video review required Williams’ kick to be retaken.
Cristhian Stuani scored the winning goal for Girona nine minutes into the second-half stoppage time, also from the penalty spot.
On Wednesday, Gazzaniga saved a penalty in the Champions League during a 3-2 loss at home to Feyenoord.
Earlier in the season, Gazzaniga scored an own goal in the 90th minute of a 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener on September 18, when he let a tricky low cross-shot from Nuno Mendes go through his hands and legs.
