Nolan Gorman hit a two-run double in the seventh inning, giving the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-5 win over the Miami Marlins in their home opener. The Marlins, who are yet to win a game this season, are off to their worst start in franchise history.
Jake Burger hit two home runs for Miami (0-8), making them the only team without a win in baseball right now. Gorman’s double in the seventh inning was part of a five-run rally that put the Cardinals ahead 6-5.
“I was expecting a fastball, but I got a slider, which was a good pitch to hit,” Gorman said. “I took my chance, and luckily it worked out.” Alec Burleson added a run-scoring single with two outs, and Masyn Winn finished the inning with an RBI triple.
“It was great to see everything come together like that,” Winn said. “Everyone was eager to bat. It was like a race to the bat rack.” Paul Goldschmidt reached base on an error, and then Sanchez gave up two singles before being replaced.
Ivan Herrera hit his first major league home run in the second inning, replacing regular catcher Willson Contreras, who got injured in the previous game. Herrera’s teammates celebrated by tossing him into a laundry basket and showering him with ice cream, chocolate, and soap.
Lance Lynn, making his first start for St. Louis since 2017, allowed three home runs and four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. He was frustrated with Burger’s home runs. “To be honest, the pitches were so bad, he should have hit them,” Lynn said. “He did what he was supposed to.”
