The Houston Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies have reached an agreement on a trade that will send Steven Adams to the Rockets in exchange for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski. The Grizzlies will acquire two second-round picks in the 2024 draft and one in 2025.
Adams, who has been sidelined for over a year due to long-term knee issues, last played on Jan. 22, 2023, and missed the rest of the previous season due to a PCL sprain in his right knee.
Although he was anticipated to return this season, Adams underwent season-ending knee surgery in October after non-operative rehab failed to address the instability. The Grizzlies announced his expected full recovery for the 2024-25 season.
While the Rockets won’t benefit from Adams’ contributions this season, they are focused on future development, anticipating his strong interior presence when he is healthy.
Despite not being a significant offensive threat, Adams is known for his reliable rebounding, defensive skills, and screening abilities. Last season, before his injury, he was averaging a career-high 11.5 rebounds. Off the court, he is highly regarded as one of the best teammates in the league and can provide guidance for rising star Alperen Sengun.
The Grizzlies, amidst a challenging season, are also looking ahead to brighter times. Ja Morant faced a 25-game suspension and a season-ending shoulder injury, while Brandon Clarke has been unavailable throughout the season, and key players like Marcus Smart have suffered long-term injuries.
With 21 different players having appeared in games, only Jaren Jackson Jr., David Roddy, and Ziaire Williams have not missed at least 10 games. Currently sitting in 13th place in the Western Conference with an 18-29 record, they are five games behind the final Play-In Tournament spot.
Considering their challenging season, the Grizzlies are likely headed toward the lottery, providing an opportunity to add another talented young player to their core of Morant, Jackson, and Desmond Bane.
The decision to trade Adams not only allows them to create more salary cap space but also provides roster flexibility for an upcoming crucial summer.
Regarding Oladipo, he has been sidelined for the entire season, and there is uncertainty about his return. He suffered a patellar tendon tear in his left knee during the previous season’s playoffs while playing for the Miami Heat. As an unrestricted free agent this summer, it is likely that Oladipo will part ways with the Grizzlies.
