Robert Saleh is known for his strong background in defense, which helped him gain respect in the NFL and eventually become the head coach of the New York Jets. However, this offseason and training camp, Saleh has expanded his focus to include the offense.
After the Jets had a tough time on offense last season, Saleh has been more involved in the offensive meetings.
“I think it’s been absolutely fantastic,” said offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett during a video call on Wednesday. “Having a defensive perspective in the room can reveal new insights.
Sometimes when you watch tape or see how defenses react, you might think a play is great, but a small adjustment can make it even better.”
Hackett appreciates Saleh’s input, which has helped enhance their offensive strategies.
Hackett has faced some criticism for the Jets’ poor offensive performance last season, which was partly due to the injury of quarterback Aaron Rodgers after just four plays.
Hackett struggled to get the offense on track with Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Trevor Siemian all playing quarterback.
There were rumors that the Jets might be looking for someone to oversee the offense above Hackett, but Saleh clarified that Hackett remains in charge of calling plays and running the offense.
Saleh has just adapted his approach and is now frequently present in offensive meetings, which Hackett finds beneficial and not threatening.
