Harry Kane set a new record for the most Champions League goals by an English player when he scored four times against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
This game was one of several records broken as Bayern Munich defeated Dinamo Zagreb 9-2, marking a strong start to European competition for their new coach, Vincent Kompany.
“Amazing game, a bit of a crazy game for sure,” Kane told broadcaster DAZN. “To score all those goals in the end was a great night.”
Kane’s goals came in the 19th, 53rd, 73rd, and 78th minutes, with three of them being penalties, bringing his total to 33 in the competition and breaking Wayne Rooney’s previous record of 30.
“To be honest, after the second (penalty) I didn’t really know what to do with the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away,” Kane said.
He scored the first goal from the penalty spot after his teammate Aleksandar Pavlovic was fouled by Ronaël Pierre-Gabriel. This goal tied him with Rooney’s record of 30, and he then scored his 31st on a rebound after goalkeeper Ivan Nevistic saved a shot from Joshua Kimmich in the 57th minute.
Kane added two more goals from the penalty spot to extend his record.
Four other Bayern players also scored during the impressive victory, including new signing Michael Olise, who netted two goals in his Champions League debut after joining from Crystal Palace.
Leon Goretzka’s header in stoppage time made Bayern the first team to score nine goals in the Champions League era. This achievement had been accomplished by some teams, including Bayern, in the older European Cup format.
This match had the highest number of goals in the competition since Borussia Dortmund beat Legia Warsaw 8-4 in 2016, according to UEFA.
At 31 years old, Kane has scored 12 Champions League goals since joining Bayern a year ago and had scored 21 goals for Tottenham before that.
