Christian Horner has emphasized the pivotal skill set that Daniel Ricciardo has brought to AlphaTauri, elevating Red Bull’s junior team. Ricciardo is set to embark on his inaugural full season with Red Bull’s sister team in 2024, marking a triumphant comeback to Formula 1 midway through 2023.
Remarkably transitioning from a driver seemingly in decline with waning confidence, Ricciardo has evolved into a seasoned leader, with his peak performance potentially yet to unfold.
Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, lauded Ricciardo’s impact on AlphaTauri, attributing it to his wealth of experience. Horner expressed his delight at witnessing Daniel’s return to F1, a move he actively sought in the previous winter.
Reflecting on Ricciardo’s initial demeanor upon joining Red Bull, Horner noted a transformation from someone disenchanted with Formula 1 to a reinvigorated, enthusiastic driver. Horner praised Ricciardo’s technical guidance to the team, particularly highlighting his impressive performance during testing at Silverstone and behind-the-scenes work on the simulator.
Acknowledging Ricciardo’s merit, despite the setback of a hand injury at Zandvoort, Horner emphasized the Australian’s commendable driving in 2023.
Ricciardo’s resurgence, coupled with Sergio Perez’s challenges in the mid-season, has intensified the competition for the role of Max Verstappen’s teammate in 2025. While Perez retains the position for the upcoming year, the final year of his contract, Ricciardo’s status presents Horner with a viable alternative.
Horner also pointed out Yuki Tsunoda as a contender from Red Bull Racing’s roster. Both drivers, belonging to Red Bull Racing, remain available options if needed. Horner clarified the independent operations of AlphaTauri, despite being owned by the same shareholders as Red Bull Racing.
