The Houston Astros climbed above .500 for the first time this year by defeating the New York Mets 10-5 on Sunday. Jake Meyers hit a decisive single in the 11th inning, part of a five-run rally.
“I always believed in this team,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “Even when we were struggling, I knew we had the ability to turn things around.”
Houston’s star player Jose Altuve was ejected in the seventh inning after a dispute with umpires over a call.
“I felt it was obvious that it was a foul ball,” Altuve said. “But the umpire behind the plate couldn’t see it clearly because of the catcher.”
Brandon Nimmo hit his 100th career home run for the Mets, a two-run shot in the seventh inning that tied the game against Bryan Abreu.
After a rain delay and with only a few thousand fans left at Citi Field, Chas McCormick’s RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Astros a 5-4 lead. Nimmo responded with a tying double in the bottom half.
In the 11th inning, Matt Festa, making his Mets debut, gave up five runs. Jake Meyers, Joey Loperfido, and Trey Cabbage each contributed with key hits.
The Astros started the season poorly but have improved significantly, finishing June with a strong record of 17 wins and 8 losses.
