Ronel Blanco had an amazing week. In just seven days, the Houston pitcher became a father, earned a spot on the opening day roster, and achieved something incredible—he threw the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season.
Blanco, playing for the Houston Astros, struck out seven batters and allowed no hits in the Astros’ 10-0 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. This victory was particularly remarkable because Blanco, aged 30, had only made his eighth career start and had faced many challenges along the way. He credited his perseverance for bringing him to this moment.
Blanco’s no-hitter was a significant achievement for both him and his family. He dedicated it to them, especially to his newborn daughter. This was the 17th no-hitter in Astros history, and the first in the majors since August of the previous year.
The game also marked some historic firsts. Joe Espada, the Astros’ manager, secured his first win in a no-hitter, making him the first manager in MLB history to do so.
Additionally, the Astros became only the fourth team in MLB history to win their first game of the season in a no-hitter.
Blanco’s success was attributed to his effective use of the changeup pitch. Despite a few close calls, including a ground ball in the ninth inning, Blanco maintained his composure and completed the game without allowing a hit.
Offensively, the Astros had a strong performance, with Kyle Tucker and Yainer Diaz each hitting two home runs.
They capitalized on Toronto’s pitcher Bowden Francis, scoring runs early in the game and extending their lead throughout. It was a game filled with historic milestones and impressive performances from both Blanco and his teammates.
