The Cubs are unlikely to make trades before the deadline to improve their chances of reaching the playoffs this year, according to Jed Hoyer, the team’s president of baseball operations. Hoyer mentioned that their main focus is on preparing for the 2025 season rather than making short-term improvements for this year.
“We probably won’t make moves that only benefit us for this season. If a move helps us in ’25 and beyond, we’re in a good position for that,” Hoyer said. “But for ’24, I don’t think that will be our focus unless things change a lot.”
Chicago has been struggling recently, losing four of their last six games, though they had a strong stretch earlier in the season, winning seven of eight games.
The Cubs started the season well with a 17-9 record but then had a tough stretch where they won only 22 out of 61 games, dropping their record to nine games below .500.
The Cubs are among the worst teams in Major League Baseball in terms of batting average and slugging percentage. Veterans Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson each had nine home runs before Monday’s game, but Swanson has been batting his worst-ever average at .210.
