Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto recently revealed that he maintains frequent communication with club captain Reece James, emphasizing their supportive dynamic.
Gusto, who joined Chelsea from Olympique Lyon in January 2023 for a reported fee of €35 million, initially spent six months on loan at the French club before officially joining the London side last summer. Initially brought in as a backup for Reece James, Gusto has seen increased playing time this season due to James’ recurring injury issues.
James, an England international, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, limiting him to just nine appearances for Chelsea this season. With his recovery expected to extend for several months, Gusto has stepped up to the challenge, albeit acknowledging the significance of James’ absence from the team.
Despite the competitive nature of their positions, Gusto highlighted the constructive relationship he shares with James. Speaking to The Athletic, Gusto expressed:
“Reece is a big player. One of the best players in this position. It’s not good for the team (that he is out injured) as Reece is the captain, and it’s not good for everyone in the club. But me, I have to be ready and take every chance.”
“We talk a lot. I try to help him, he tries to help me as well. It’s a good competition between him and me. We are not similar (as players), but when we are on the pitch, we try to help the team, keeping a good mentality, score, and assist. That’s what we have to do.”
Despite the challenges posed by James’ absence, Gusto has proven himself with 24 appearances across competitions for Chelsea this season, contributing six assists to the team’s cause.
