Ihor Potieria is seeking to have his defeat at UFC 301 against Michel Pereira overturned to a no-contest. The fight took place on May 4 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Potieria tapped out to a guillotine choke within the first minute. Potieria has since claimed that Pereira committed a foul by landing an illegal strike during a backflip, with his leg making contact with Potieria’s head while he was on the ground.

In a post on Instagram, Potieria described the incident as an “illegal kick” and expressed hope that justice would prevail and the fight would be annulled. The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) has confirmed that Potieria has filed an official appeal regarding the outcome.

Potieria mentioned that several American athletic commissions would have ruled the incident a disqualification, but he is awaiting the decision of the Rio de Janeiro athletic commission.

Potieria stressed the importance of fairness in his Instagram post, stating that he accepts whatever decision is made but wants it to be just. He voiced his frustration about the situation, noting that while Pereira’s somersault move might look impressive, it broke the rules and should not go unpunished.

Potieria is determined to seek a fair resolution and hinted at a potential rematch in the future, promising a different outcome if given adequate preparation time.

The referee, Fernando Portella, consulted with other CABMMA officials before officially declaring Pereira the winner by submission. Despite the controversy, Pereira defended his actions in the post-fight press conference, acknowledging the risks involved in his move but embracing his identity as a risk-taker. Pereira’s victory adds to his impressive eight-fight winning streak.

As Potieria awaits the decision from the Rio de Janeiro Athletic Commission, the incident highlights the ongoing debate over the enforcement of MMA rules and the fairness of officiating, especially when fights occur in different jurisdictions. The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for both fighters’ careers and the interpretation of rules in future matches.
