Max Verstappen and Red Bull have been really strong at the Japanese Grand Prix in recent years. Verstappen won this race both in 2022 and 2023. But even though he’s done well here before, Verstappen doesn’t think he’ll dominate like he did in the past.
He thinks the competition will be closer between different teams this time. Even Lewis Hamilton said Mercedes has made good progress lately. Verstappen said, “It was a good start for us. The balance wasn’t too far off, so that’s always good. But it seems like everyone is closer compared to last year.”
Hamilton also praised Mercedes for improving the car’s pace since the season started. He said, “It was the best session we’ve had this year. The car felt the best it has so far.”
But it’s important to know that teams didn’t get much time to practice in the second session because of the rain. They saved their tires for more rain expected over the weekend. So, the next practice session will give a better idea of where Mercedes stands.
Ferrari also seems to be getting closer to Red Bull. After winning in Australia, Carlos Sainz was just two-tenths slower than Verstappen in the first practice session.
