Robert Gasser made his big league debut memorable by pitching six innings without allowing any runs and just two hits. His strong performance helped the Milwaukee Brewers dominate the St. Louis Cardinals 11-2 on Friday night, handing the Cardinals their sixth straight loss.

“It was everything I could have hoped for, playing in front of so many people in probably the biggest game of my life so far,” Gasser said. “It was awesome.”

Willy Adames contributed with three doubles, scoring twice, and driving in two runs. The Brewers continued their winning streak against the Cardinals, making it seven wins in a row, a streak that started last year.

William Contreras crossed the plate three times, while Christian Yelich scored twice. Rhys Hoskins, Sal Frelick, and Jake Bauers each added two RBIs to the Brewers’ tally.

Gasser didn’t walk any batters, only hit one, and joined a select group of Brewers pitchers who have thrown at least six scoreless innings in their debut. The others include Jim Slaton in 1974, Steve Woodard in 1997, Chris Sáenz in 2004, and Brandon Woodruff in 2017.

Milwaukee acquired Gasser, outfielder Eury Pérez, and pitcher Dinelson Lamet, in a trade in 2022 that sent star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.

“I think Gass came with a little chip on his shoulder, like, ‘I should have been here last year in my mind, and they made me wait,'” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “Maybe that’s something that we could think about sometimes.

Maybe we need to make some guys wait. Gass is a talked-about guy as a minor leaguer. It’s great to see. They get here, they pay their dues, they get here and they’ve got a little edge to them when they get here.”
