With the core players who led them to the Super Bowl still on the team, the San Francisco 49ers didn’t have many obvious gaps to fill in the roster before the NFL draft.

Their approach was about more than just immediately strengthening the team; they also looked for players who could become valuable starters in the future without costing too much.

Coach Kyle Shanahan explained that while they aimed to address current needs, it’s not always straightforward. They had to consider what would benefit them now and in the long term.

The 49ers have most of their starting positions filled, but some players are getting older, and they might face salary cap issues later, especially when it’s time to pay quarterback Brock Purdy.

They’re hoping the draft picks can provide affordable solutions for the future.

Their first-round pick, Ricky Pearsall from Florida, could quickly become the team’s third wide receiver and punt returner. He might take on a bigger role if Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel leave the team.

On the second day of the draft, they focused on adding depth to the cornerback and offensive line positions. Renardo Green from Florida State and Dominick Puni from Kansas were drafted to compete for playing time right away.
