Future Hall of Famer Tom Brady was approved as a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, and just a day later, rumors began about legendary New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick possibly being a candidate for the Raiders’ head coach position.
This rumor comes from Kirk Minihane of Barstool Sports, who mentioned that two sources within the Patriots organization told him Brady’s first move as part owner would be to see if Belichick is interested in coaching the Raiders.
“I’ll just say this, I won’t get specific,” Minihane said. “People have told me that Brady’s first move is to ask Bill Belichick if he’s interested in being coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Two sources have told me that. Two high up in the Patriots’ organization have told me that.”
While Minihane isn’t as widely recognized as news breakers like Adam Schefter or Ian Rapoport, he has a long history in Boston sports and used to be a columnist and radio host for WEEI, so his information shouldn’t be completely ignored.
Currently, the Raiders have a head coach in Antonio Pierce, who stepped in as interim last year after Josh McDaniels was fired. However, the Raiders are struggling with a 2-4 record under Pierce in 2024, and he hasn’t performed well since his impressive interim stint in 2023.
Even if Pierce were doing an acceptable job (which he isn’t), it would be unwise for the Raiders to overlook someone like Belichick. Opportunities to hire the greatest coach in NFL history don’t come often, and Belichick would bring instant respect to the franchise.
If Belichick is interested, the Raiders should do everything possible to make it happen.
