Two weeks into training camp, the Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation remains unclear, with no standout leader emerging.
Jarrett Stidham appeared as the top quarterback on the team’s first depth chart this week, with Zach Wilson in the second spot and rookie Bo Nix in third.
This caused some discussion nationally about Nix’s position until coach Sean Payton addressed it. He clarified that the depth chart was not significant and that he had listed all rookies last as a standard practice. Payton mentioned he only briefly worked on the depth chart because it is required by the NFL before preseason games.
Payton’s upcoming announcement about the quarterback rotation for the Broncos’ preseason game against Indianapolis on Sunday should not be taken as definitive.
Stidham, who started the last two games of the previous season after Russell Wilson was benched, is likely to be the starter. The Broncos acquired Zach Wilson from the Jets in April before selecting Nix with the 12th overall pick in the draft.
Wilson has seen fewer first-team reps recently, but Payton is not limiting the competition to just two players, and Wilson remains focused on his performance.
Nix is viewed as a future key player for the franchise, but it is uncertain if he will start immediately or begin as a backup. He has not been a backup since eighth grade when he played varsity football at Scottsboro High School in Alabama and later transferred to Pinson Valley High School when his father became the head coach.
