Josh Hines-Allen is planning to get a new tattoo, but he’s not sure where it will go yet. He knows it will say “Hines.”

Hines-Allen, who already has “Allen” tattooed on his right elbow, changed his last name this year to honor his mother’s side of the family. His new last name matches the hyphenated names of his four older sisters: Myisha, LaTorri, Kyra, and Ranese.

His family’s response was, “About time, really,” he said.

This is just one of the steps Hines-Allen is taking to build his legacy. Last year, the Jaguars pass rusher set a team record with 17½ sacks and then signed a five-year, $141.25 million contract with $76.5 million guaranteed.

“This year, it’s very personal for me,” he said. “I learned what works for me last year. Now, I’m going to build on that and improve mentally, physically, and emotionally.”

Hines-Allen spent much of the offseason training in Arizona and attending Von Miller’s pass-rushing summit in Las Vegas in late June.

He’s now working to catch up as training camp starts and is looking forward to fitting into new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s 4-3 scheme.

Nielsen said, “He’s a competitor. He really wants it. He says all the right things. He wants to be a great player, and he wants a great defense and team. You can feel his enthusiasm as he talks to the guys. I’m really excited about him.”

Hines-Allen is 10 sacks away from tying Tony Brackens’ franchise record of 55 sacks and hopes to be in contention for the NFL’s defensive player of the year award. He also aims to help the Jaguars reach their first Super Bowl.

Achieving any of these goals would add to his legacy, and winning the Super Bowl would help him match his sister Myisha’s achievement. She won the WNBA title with the Washington Mystics in 2019.
