Jake Cave hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning to break a tie, helping the Colorado Rockies defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Thursday night and split the four-game series.
Charlie Blackmon contributed with two hits, including a two-run double for the Rockies.
Cave’s home run came off Tobias Myers (5-3), driving a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence. This was Cave’s first home run since joining the Rockies in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies late in spring training.
“I can now say I hit a big league homer for the Colorado Rockies,” Cave said. “For a lot of kids, that’s the dream. I’ve done it now for my third team, and that’s something special.”
Cave, who has also played for Minnesota and Philadelphia in his seven-year MLB career, initially joined the Rockies to provide depth but has seen increased playing time due to injuries to outfielders Kris Bryant and Jordan Beck.
He has been performing well with more opportunities.
“I’m playing more regularly now, so there are certain adjustments that naturally come with that,” Cave explained. “I feel more prepared in my approach. I’m seeing offspeed pitches better and timing fastballs better.”
The Brewers, trailing 3-0, narrowed the gap with Andruw Monasterio’s two-run single in the fourth inning off Cal Quantrill, who had walked the bases loaded.
Anthony Molina (1-0) relieved Quantrill in the sixth but walked Rhys Hoskins, who later scored on Jackson Chourio’s RBI double to tie the game. Jalen Beeks secured the win with four outs for his seventh save of the season.
