Jake DeBrusk scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with one minute left in overtime, as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
DeBrusk also scored two power-play goals in a 43-second span early in the second period. Pius Suter and Erik Brannstrom added the other goals for the Canucks, and Kevin Lankinen made 27 saves.
DeBrusk’s game-winning goal came from the left side, assisted by Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.
For Detroit, Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, Michael Rasmussen, and Vladimir Tarasenko scored.
Detroit’s starting goalie, Cam Talbot, left the game in the second period due to a lower-body injury. Ville Husso replaced him and made 15 saves.
Lankinen is now 10-0-0 on the road this season, setting a new NHL record for the most road wins to start a season, surpassing Glenn Hall (1965-66) and Talbot (2023-24). Talbot played for Los Angeles last season.
Detroit took the lead first with 6:03 left in the first period. Erik Gustafsson took a shot from the left point that Lankinen saved. The rebound came to Berggren, who quickly snapped it past the goalie from the right circle. Marco Kasper got the second assist.
The Canucks took the lead during a 5-on-3 power play that carried over from the first period into the second. DeBrusk tipped in a rebound of Pettersson’s shot just 23 seconds into the period. Hughes got the second assist.
At 5-on-4, DeBrusk scored again at 1:06 of the second period on a rebound from Hughes’ shot.
The Red Wings tied the game at 2-2 right after a Vancouver penalty expired. DeBrincat scored from the left circle with assists from Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond at 6:38 of the second period.
Suter gave the Canucks the lead again late in the second period, scoring on a breakaway and beating Husso on the stick side.
In the third period, Rasmussen scored a power-play goal during a scramble in front of the net at 2:24.
Detroit took the lead at 4:50 of the third when Tarasenko scored from the left circle, but Brannstrom tied the game again with a slap shot from the left side with 3:20 left.
