Janja Garnbret and Brooke Raboutou shared a joyful moment and hugged after the boulder and lead sport climbing final at the Paris Games on Saturday.

Garnbret had just solidified her place as a top star in the sport by defending her Olympic title. Raboutou was celebrating the first-ever climbing Olympic medal for the U.S. women’s team.

Garnbret, from Slovenia, who won gold in combined climbing when sport climbing first appeared at the Tokyo Games three years ago, edged out Raboutou for the win with her final climb of the day in Le Bourget.

Leonardo Veddriq of Indonesia claimed the speed gold in Paris, while Toby Roberts of Great Britain won the men’s gold in both lead and boulder.

Aleksandra Miroslaw of Poland took the women’s gold in speed on Wednesday.

In Tokyo, boulder and lead were combined with speed, with only one medal awarded for each gender.

Garnbret, who has won more international climbing titles than any other athlete, is known for her dominance in the sport and her efforts to address eating disorders in climbing.

She had to take time off last year after breaking her toe.
