Celtics’ Jaylen Brown on Dunk Contest: Players Are Afraid to ‘Get Turned into a Meme’

Following his second-place finish in the Dunk Contest behind Mac McClung on Saturday, Jaylen Brown, the shooting guard for the Boston Celtics, shared his perspective on the contemporary dunk contest.

According to Shane Young of Forbes Sports, Brown believes that in today’s media-driven landscape, some players are hesitant about how their performances will be perceived on social platforms. However, Brown approached Saturday’s contest with a desire to inject creativity and enjoyment into his dunks.

“In this media era, some players are just afraid to get turned into a meme or whatever,” Brown remarked. “I wanted to come out and have fun within it and that’s what I did.”

Brown showcased his ingenuity by paying homage to former Dunk Contest champions Dominque Wilkins and Dee Brown, both of whom also wore the Celtics jersey, along with honoring the late Terrence Clarke, who tragically passed away in 2021 prior to the NBA Draft.

For his final dunk, Brown added a playful touch, donning a glove on his left hand à la Michael Jackson. This move not only showcased his creativity but also served as a subtle response to critics who have questioned his ability to handle the ball with his left hand.

Despite Brown’s efforts to infuse fun into his dunks, they didn’t receive the overwhelmingly positive reception he may have anticipated. He faced boos from the crowd upon receiving his scores and didn’t garner much praise on social media. Nonetheless, his primary goal was to enjoy himself, and in that regard, he succeeded.

Looking ahead, Brown will shift his focus to loftier aspirations beyond winning a Dunk Contest. Having participated in Sunday’s All-Star Game, he aims to contribute to the Boston Celtics’ quest for success as they currently lead the Eastern Conference and set their sights on a potential NBA Finals appearance.
