The 49ers are currently dealing with negotiations for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s new contract. However, CEO Jed York is already looking ahead to a big task next year.
Quarterback Brock Purdy will be able to negotiate a contract extension after the 2024 season, and the 49ers know it’s going to be significant. Purdy has been a great value since being picked in the seventh round of the 2022 draft. York sees it as a positive challenge when your quarterback performs well enough to command one of the highest salaries in the league.
“It’s expected in the market. Brock will likely ask for a salary that surpasses previous records,” York stated. He noted that very few players currently earn over $40 million per year as a quarterback.
Currently, 12 quarterbacks are earning an average annual salary of $40 million or more. With the success the 49ers have had with Purdy over the past two years, he’s likely to join that group.
York mentioned that the team has a history of securing their quarterbacks with contracts, citing examples like Jimmy Garoppolo and Colin Kaepernick. Therefore, it’s probable that a contract extension for Purdy will happen in 2025.
