New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich has made a significant change to his coaching staff, relieving offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of his playcalling duties. This decision is particularly noteworthy as Hackett is a close confidant of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a relationship that influenced Rodgers’ trade to the Jets.
Despite the personal connection, Ulbrich emphasized the need for a new perspective and has appointed Todd Downing, the quarterbacks’ coach and passing game coordinator, as the new playcaller. Ulbrich explained that the move is about offering a fresh approach to the offense, rather than a critique of Hackett’s work.
Hackett will stay with the team in an undisclosed role, and Ulbrich will remain defensive coordinator, continuing to call plays on that side of the ball. He hopes to eventually get involved with the offense and bring his personality into the unit. A key factor in this coaching shift is how it would be received by Rodgers, who has a long-standing friendship with Hackett. Ulbrich stated that he discussed the change with Rodgers, who, while understanding the relationship with Hackett, supported the decision.
Downing, a former offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans, will take over the Jets’ offense starting with their Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills. The Jets are currently 2-3, and a win would place them in contention for the AFC East lead. Downing brings a reputation for running physical, disciplined offenses, especially during his time with the Titans, where star running back Derrick Henry played a central role. The Jets are hoping that Downing’s experience will help reinvigorate a struggling offensive unit.
Hackett, who was hired in 2023 in part due to his connection to Rodgers, has overseen an underperforming Jets offense. In 22 games under his direction, the Jets have ranked near the bottom of the league in key offensive statistics, including points per game and total yards. While Rodgers was expected to transform the offense, his Achilles injury limited him to just four snaps this season. The team has since cycled through multiple backup quarterbacks without finding much success.
The Jets’ offensive struggles have been compounded by poor pass protection and ineffective running, leading to injuries for Rodgers and disappointing performances across the board. Despite these challenges, Rodgers recently acknowledged the need for change and expressed his willingness to support any adjustments. Downing now faces the challenge of turning around an offense that has yet to find its identity, but Ulbrich is optimistic that a more aggressive and confident approach will emerge under his leadership.
