Jen Pawol made history as she stepped onto the field as the umpire for an MLB spring training game between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals on Saturday, becoming the first woman in 17 years to do so.

The MLB Twitter account announced Pawol’s participation, highlighting her role as the third base umpire in the game, marking a significant milestone for women in baseball.

Pawol’s presence was celebrated as she officiated the Astros’ 7-4 victory, showcasing her expertise in various positions throughout the game. Starting at third base, she later transitioned to second base for three innings before concluding at first base for the final three frames.

Raised in New Jersey, Pawol’s journey to the umpiring profession began after her time as a catcher on the softball team at Hofstra University. Prior to pursuing umpiring full-time, she worked as an art teacher, demonstrating her diverse interests and talents.

Pawol’s umpiring career has seen steady progress, with notable achievements in various leagues over the years. She started in the Gulf Coast League in 2016 and steadily climbed the ranks, eventually officiating in the South Atlantic League, High-A Midwest League, and Double-A Eastern League, among others.

Looking ahead, Pawol’s trajectory suggests she may soon reach another milestone in her career. Reports indicate that she is expected to return to Triple-A as a crew chief, although the specifics remain subject to change, given the dynamic nature of MLB umpiring assignments.

With her inclusion on the call-up list for the 2024 season, Pawol stands poised to potentially become the first woman to officiate an MLB game, a groundbreaking achievement that would further pave the way for gender diversity in baseball officiating.
