Jordan Travis is still in the process of recovering from a severe leg injury that paused his football journey. Being patient has become a skill for Travis, especially in recent times.

The ex-Florida State standout, now with the New York Jets after being drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft, will use his rookie season to learn from Aaron Rodgers, the team’s current starting quarterback.

He has thought about the potential scenario where he might take over from the four-time NFL MVP in the future.

“Yes, I think about that often,” Travis mentioned on Saturday after the Jets’ second day of rookie minicamp. “But for now, I’m concentrating on my recovery, helping my teammates, and being a supportive presence.” Travis’s promising season with the Seminoles took a turn on Nov. 18, 2023.

During a game against North Alabama, Travis, known for his versatile playing style, was injured while attempting to gain extra yards during a run. His left leg got tangled awkwardly under a defender, resulting in a fracture to his leg/ankle.

He was taken off the field on a cart, bringing an end to both his season and his college football career. Despite his absence, the Seminoles managed to win their next game and secure the ACC championship. However, their undefeated streak ended, and they missed out on the playoff, becoming the first unbeaten Power Five team to do so.

Travis, who chose not to discuss opinions that the Seminoles were overlooked, had his walking boot removed a week before the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February.

It marked significant progress in his recovery journey, but the injury still posed challenges for his path to the professional league. Despite being once considered a potential Heisman contender, the serious injury meant he would be sidelined for some time, regardless of whether he was drafted or not. However, Travis never doubted his ability to continue playing.

“No, I haven’t. Not at all,” he stated. “I actually embrace challenges. I wake up every day ready to face them. It adds to the story. From the moment I broke my leg until now, I’ve always felt this way. “I thrive on it, you know. So, no, I’ve never questioned it.”

Travis, who leaned on his family and faith during this period, was overwhelmed with emotion when he received the call from the Jets last Saturday informing him of his selection in the fifth round, as the 171st overall pick. It was a moment of relief after enduring numerous challenges and sacrifices to regain his health.

“Without a doubt, it’s like a dream come true,” Travis expressed. “It’s a chance for me to improve. That’s how I see every opportunity. I believe that everything happens for a reason.”

During parts of the Jets’ rookie minicamp practices, Travis worked with the trainers. He humorously mentioned attempting to join the stretch line before one session, but the Jets redirected him. “I’m eager to get back out there,” he exclaimed happily.

During some drills, Travis joined the other five rookie quarterbacks on the field and pretended to throw passes. He’s looking forward to the day when he can fully participate. “I’m just grateful to be holding a ball again and wearing a helmet,” Travis remarked.

With the Jets, there’s no pressure for Travis to play right away. This season, he’s expected to learn from both Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor, soaking up as much knowledge as he can from the experienced quarterbacks. “He’s an incredible athlete,” coach Robert Saleh praised. “We see him as a moldable talent.”

Saleh mentioned that the team will keep an eye on Travis during his recovery, which is anticipated to continue through voluntary workouts, organized team activities, and mandatory minicamp. However, the hope is that Travis will be fully prepared when training camp begins in July.

“He’s barely tapped into his potential,” Saleh added. “He was winning games purely on athleticism. Once we combine that with his football skills, we believe he’ll be a great player.”

Travis is confident that he will achieve his goal of becoming a starting quarterback in the NFL. “Yes, sir,” Travis affirmed. “Without a doubt.”
