Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed disappointment and disagreement with the NFL’s decision to suspend safety Derwin James Jr. for the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The suspension stemmed from a hit James delivered to Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth during the third quarter of the Chargers’ recent 20-10 loss. James was penalized for unnecessary roughness during the game, but Harbaugh contended that Freiermuth’s positioning contributed to the incident.

Harbaugh argued that Freiermuth was not a defenseless player and that his actions changed the trajectory of the hit. He suggested that Freiermuth’s stiff-arm played a significant role in the contact, asserting that the impact was primarily made with James’ forearm and shoulder before any helmet contact occurred.

Harbaugh emphasized that James’ tackle technique aligned with the league’s emphasis on player safety, suggesting that the hit should not have warranted suspension.

Despite his history, James has worked diligently to reduce penalties associated with unnecessary roughness, which he has accrued seven times since entering the NFL in 2018—ranking as the second most in the league during that period.

Harbaugh noted that James has adjusted his tackling approach, often sacrificing yardage to ensure he does not deliver a hit that could draw a penalty. Harbaugh cited James’ proactive outreach to officials over the summer as evidence of his commitment to adhering to the rules.

The NFL’s vice president of football operations, Jon Runyan, provided a counterpoint, stating that video evidence showed James lowering his head during the hit, leading to illegal and forcible contact with his helmet.

Runyan indicated that James’ pattern of behavior reflects a disregard for safety rules, warranting substantial penalties to protect players on the field. This perspective contributed to the decision to uphold the suspension despite James’ appeal.

With James sidelined for the game, the Chargers will rely on backup safeties Elijah Molden and AJ Finley. Molden recently showcased his potential by securing an interception that earned him recognition in a previous game against the Carolina Panthers. The Chargers will need to adjust their defensive strategy in light of James’ absence as they prepare to face a tough opponent in the Chiefs.
