Jim Harbaugh’s first season as the Chargers head coach faced a challenge early in training camp.

Quarterback Justin Herbert injured his foot with a plantar fascia issue, keeping him off the field for the past couple of weeks. The goal is for him to be ready to play in Week One against the Raiders, but he’s currently in a boot and missing practice time in a new offense.

Although this situation isn’t ideal, Harbaugh emphasized that Herbert is still making “very significant” progress off the field through “mental reps, film work, and building a rapport” with the team.

“Even though he would have preferred to practice, he can’t,” Harbaugh said, according to Jarrett Bell of USA Today. “So, let’s focus on what we can do. He’s involved in everything possible to get himself ready for the first game.”

Updates on Herbert’s condition will come as the opener approaches, and everyone is hoping for positive news as Harbaugh starts his coaching career with the Chargers.
