NFL Rumors: Joey Bosa, Chargers Restructure Contract; DE to Remain with Team

Los Angeles Chargers’ standout edge-rusher, Joey Bosa, has opted to restructure his contract, committing to stay with the team, as confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The possibility of Bosa’s departure emerged when reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on March 9 indicated that the Chargers were open to trade offers for seasoned players like Bosa and Khalil Mack. Despite speculation, teams interested in acquiring them waited to see if the Chargers would release them.

However, Bosa, a four-time Pro Bowler and the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year, has decided to remain with the Bolts.

Bosa began his journey with the Chargers as the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, showcasing his prowess even after a delayed start due to a hamstring injury in his rookie season. Nonetheless, he finished his debut season with 10.5 sacks and 41 tackles in 12 games.

Throughout his career, Bosa has consistently demonstrated his dominance on the field, amassing an impressive 67.0 sacks, 143 quarterback hits, and 321 tackles in 93 games, with 84 starts. He received Pro Bowl honors in 2017 and consecutively from 2019 to 2021.

In 2020, Bosa secured a lucrative five-year, $135 million extension, extending his tenure with the Chargers through the 2025 season. However, injuries have plagued his career, including a bruised bone in his left foot in 2018, concussion protocol instances in 2020, and a groin tear that sidelined him for 12 games in 2022.

In the past season, the 28-year-old Bosa exhibited his prowess with 20 tackles and 6.5 sacks in nine games before a season-ending right foot sprain.

When operating at full capacity, Bosa stands as one of the NFL’s premier pass-rushers. The Chargers undoubtedly hope for a sustained period of good health for him to reclaim the form that once rendered him one of football’s most feared defensive players.

This resurgence is critical for the Chargers, especially as they emerge from a five-win season and endeavor to address their financial constraints. Notably, they’ve restructured Khalil Mack’s contract and released wide receiver Mike Williams to navigate their financial landscape effectively.
