Patrick Mahomes’ prowess as a high school athlete was evident long before his NFL dominance began. Hailing from Whitehouse High School in Texas, a state renowned for producing top football talent, Mahomes stood out among the best.
While many NFL quarterbacks trace their roots back to Texas high school football, Mahomes quickly established himself as one of the premier talents. Despite playing the quarterback position for just two years at that level, he left an indelible mark and solidified his legacy.
In a recent episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, Johnny Manziel reflected on Mahomes’ high school career in conversation with Shannon Sharpe. While acknowledging Mahomes’ accomplishments, Manziel emphasized that another Texas quarterback, Kyler Murray, holds the title of the greatest in state history.
“If you know anything about Texas High School football, I would say [Kyler Murray]’s résumé and what he did makes him hands down the best Texas high school football player to ever play,” Manziel remarked.
Murray, who attended Allen High School, boasts an impeccable record, leading his team to three state championships with an undefeated streak of 42-0 under his leadership. His impressive stats include 8,384 passing yards, 100 passing touchdowns, 2,826 rushing yards, and 42 rushing touchdowns.
Comparatively, Mahomes’ achievements at Whitehouse High School, with 8,458 passing yards, 96 passing touchdowns, 1,198 rushing yards, and 21 rushing touchdowns, fall slightly short. Despite Mahomes’ remarkable success, Manziel’s assessment holds weight regarding Murray’s superior high school football career.
Moreover, Murray’s accomplishments extended into college, where he clinched a Heisman Trophy before becoming the first overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.
Nonetheless, the Kansas City Chiefs are undoubtedly content with securing Mahomes, a decision that has yielded two NFL MVP awards and three Super Bowl rings for the franchise, despite his initial lack of pursuit in football.
