Jordan Spieth’s journey at the 2024 Genesis Invitation took an unexpected turn as the PGA Tour announced his disqualification on Friday due to signing an incorrect scorecard.
According to PGA Tour Communications, Spieth mistakenly signed for a three on the fourth hole when he had actually made a four. This error came amidst a mixed performance through the early stages of the tournament, where Spieth tallied four birdies, four bogeys, and a double within the first three holes.
On the fourth hole, a par-3, Spieth’s misstep occurred as he failed to convert a four-foot putt for par, resulting in a bogey. Despite rebounding with a birdie on the following fifth hole, Spieth’s disqualification ensued.
In response, Spieth took to social media to address the situation, expressing regret for the oversight and emphasizing his adherence to the rules. “Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct,” Spieth shared on X. “Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility.”
Although Spieth’s real-time bogey was duly noted on the leaderboard, his signing of the scorecard with a par for the hole constituted grounds for disqualification.
This marks Spieth’s third disqualification in the last four years, following incidents at the Hero World Challenge in 2021 for playing from the wrong tees and at the JP McManus Pro-Am last year for prematurely retrieving his ball from the green.
Despite this setback, Spieth remains determined to regain his stride and return to the winner’s circle soon. With 13 PGA Tour victories under his belt, his most recent triumph dates back to 2022 at the RBC Heritage.
