Fraser Minten scored his first NHL goal, Joseph Woll recorded his second career shutout, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 on Wednesday.
Woll made 31 saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
William Nylander contributed a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have now won three straight games. Pontus Holmberg scored an empty-net goal, and Mitch Marner and John Tavares each had two assists. Toronto has won six of their last seven games.
Adin Hill stopped 23 shots for the Golden Knights in the first game of their five-game road trip. Vegas has lost two consecutive games.
Minten scored at 8:53 of the first period from the slot with a quick snap shot. Nylander passed the puck from the neutral zone to the left side of the net behind the goal line and sent a backhand pass in front. This was Minten’s first NHL game of the season and his fifth career game.
Toronto’s Matthew Knies went to the dressing room at 7:59 of the second period after taking a hit from Zach Whitecloud. Knies did not return to the game. Simon Benoit of the Maple Leafs received a double minor roughing penalty for the ensuing scuffle, while Whitecloud got a roughing minor.
Vegas had the upper hand for much of the second period but could not generate many dangerous chances from 16 shots on goal. The Maple Leafs only had six shots on goal during that time.
Nylander scored his 13th goal of the season on a power play at 3:01 of the third period, completing a two-on-one break with Marner. This followed a short-handed break by Vegas that was stopped, with Whitecloud serving a hooking penalty.
Holmberg added his first goal of the season at 16:41 of the third period.
On Wednesday, Toronto placed Max Domi on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and called up Nikita Grebenkin from the AHL Toronto Marlies. Grebenkin made his NHL debut, recording one shot on goal in 11:05 of ice time.
Minten had been called up from the Marlies on Tuesday after David Kampf was placed on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury.
