Jude Bellingham’s 22nd goal this season rescued a 2-2 tie for England against Belgium on Tuesday, maintaining his excellent performance leading up to the European Championship.

The Real Madrid midfielder showed his significance to Gareth Southgate’s squad before the Euros by scoring in the fifth minute of extra time at Wembley Stadium, ensuring England avoided consecutive losses following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

“I knew the criticism we would’ve faced if we had lost two games in a row,” Bellingham commented.

Belgium seemed poised for their first away victory against England after two first-half goals from Youri Tielemans, sandwiching an Ivan Toney penalty. However, deep into extra time, Bellingham received a pass from substitute James Maddison in a crowded area and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matz Sels with a side-footed shot.

It marked his third goal for England and his first at Wembley, prompting a jubilant reaction from Southgate on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Tielemans, substituted earlier, expressed frustration by punching his seat.

“We left it late and kept everyone on their toes. It shows the resilience in the squad,” England’s Jarrod Bowen remarked.

Bellingham is rapidly emerging as a key player for both his club and country. He joined Madrid from Borussia Dortmund last June in a deal potentially exceeding $139 million, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top players.

England vs Belgium

Leading the Spanish league with 16 goals, he plays a crucial role in Madrid’s aspirations for title wins. Similarly, he is a driving force in England’s midfield as Southgate aims to end the nation’s trophy drought.

Although his recent contribution came in a friendly match, it showcased his growing influence at just 20 years old as England fought back for a draw.

Belgium took the lead in the 11th minute after an error from England keeper Jordan Pickford, but Toney equalized from the penalty spot in the 17th. Tielemans restored Belgium’s lead before halftime with another goal. Despite numerous chances, England couldn’t level until Bellingham’s late strike.

“We should have won with all the chances we created. But these two games will help us in the long run,” Bellingham added. “I’m sure the manager will be pleased with our performance. You’re never satisfied with a loss or a draw, but we have to be content with how we played.”

An early setback for Southgate was John Stones’ injury, leading to his substitution after just 10 minutes.
