After expressing initial optimism, Jurgen Klopp has delivered a bleak update on the status of Spanish midfielder Thiago. Thiago has endured a frustrating season, marking his first appearance in 10 months as a substitute against Arsenal earlier this month.
However, during that game, Thiago suffered a muscle issue, initially downplayed by Klopp as not overly serious. Unfortunately, the situation has worsened for Thiago, with indications suggesting a recurrence of the hip injury that sidelined him since last April.
With his contract expiring at the season’s end, Klopp admitted that the possibility of Thiago never returning to the pitch for the club is becoming a harsh reality.
“I don’t know, to be honest (if he will play again this season),” Klopp disclosed ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup tie against Southampton. “It’s a couple of things but what he has to do now from a medical point of view and I don’t know if it will mean again if he can play again.
It’s not a short-term thing and that’s why I’m not 100 percent in it. I’m not sure if it’s the same but the region is the same.”
Thiago’s arrival at Liverpool in 2020 was met with high expectations, following their Premier League title victory. However, the Spaniard has grappled with numerous injury setbacks since joining the Anfield side. Just weeks into his tenure, he was sidelined for 72 days due to a challenge from Richarlison in the Merseyside derby.
Subsequently, Thiago has struggled with hamstring, hip, and thigh injuries, limiting him to just 68 Premier League appearances across four seasons in England.
