José Berríos and two other pitchers held the Colorado Rockies to just two hits, while Justin Turner contributed with three hits and three RBIs, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-0 victory on Sunday.
Turner’s hits included a single in the first inning that drove in a run, a double in the third for another RBI, and another single in the fifth for his third RBI of the game. Turner has been particularly effective against left-handed pitchers this season, with eight hits in ten at-bats and six RBIs.
Berríos, who improved his record to 3-0, pitched brilliantly, allowing only two singles, walking two, and striking out seven batters. His scoreless streak extended to 15 2/3 innings, and his ERA dropped to 1.05. Rockies manager Bud Black acknowledged Berríos’ dominance, stating that the Rockies couldn’t figure him out.
The Blue Jays’ bullpen also performed well, with Génesis Cabrera pitching a perfect eighth inning and Nate Pearson striking out the side in the ninth to secure the shutout victory for Toronto.
On the other side, Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland struggled, giving up four runs and seven hits in five innings. Freeland, who suffered his third loss in four starts, saw his ERA drop from 16.03 to 13.21.
The Rockies’ offensive struggles continued, with their opponent scoring first in 15 of their 16 games this season. Despite a strong offensive showing in Friday’s win, where they had a season-high 20 hits, the Rockies couldn’t maintain their momentum and were limited to just two hits by the Blue Jays’ pitching staff on Sunday.
