Late in Minnesota’s offseason preparations, coach Kevin O’Connell informed the media that Sam Darnold, the experienced quarterback, would start at training camp instead of rookie J.J. McCarthy, chosen 10th overall.

However, McCarthy’s draft position indicates he will likely take over as QB1 sooner rather than later.

In a detailed ESPN article by Kevin Seifert about the Vikings’ shift from Kirk Cousins to McCarthy under O’Connell and G.M. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the coach mentioned his cautious approach based on experiences with young quarterbacks.

O’Connell has intentionally kept the timeline for McCarthy’s ascension to starter flexible.

According to O’Connell, McCarthy will be ready when “he feels comfortable with our offense and can perform well under pressure in challenging NFL situations, without his lack of experience is a major obstacle.

“But it’s important to understand that we don’t expect perfection from him. He will face challenges and learn as he goes. Deciding when he’ll start isn’t something you can plan out; it’s a judgment call.”

During their two seasons together, O’Connell and Adofo-Mensah have achieved a 20-14 record and won the NFC North once. Despite quarterback Kirk Cousins’ season-ending Achilles injury in 2023, the Vikings remained in playoff contention but finished with a 7-10 record.

In the NFL, O’Connell’s job security could potentially be questioned if the team performs poorly in 2024.

But O’Connell emphasized that his main goal is to set McCarthy up for success. “It’s about doing what’s best for the organization,” O’Connell stated.

“Those factors shouldn’t influence J.J.’s development plan or any other player’s plan. We can’t let selfish motives affect that decision.

“That principle won’t change because, whether it’s my experience as a former quarterback or not, I feel responsible for considering what’s best for J.J. and our whole team when we decide.”
