Antonio Pierce, head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, faces a significant setback in his prospects of returning to college coaching due to sanctions from the NCAA. Much like Jim Harbaugh, who previously received a four-year “show cause” order, Pierce’s situation is more severe, with the NCAA imposing an eight-year “show cause” penalty.

This means any NCAA program wishing to hire Pierce will have to justify why it shouldn’t face penalties for doing so, essentially barring Pierce from college football for the next eight years.

The harsh penalty stems from Pierce’s time as a coach at Arizona State University. According to the NCAA, Pierce violated ethical conduct rules while working under head coach Herm Edwards. Specifically, Pierce and other football staff members, with the assistance of a booster, facilitated impermissible recruiting activities during the COVID-19 dead period. These activities included unofficial visits over 15 weekends, where recruits were given unauthorized access to tryouts, facility tours, and entertainment.

The NCAA investigation found that Pierce played a significant role in these recruiting violations, arranging or personally providing free meals, airfare, lodging, and apparel to 27 prospects. Multiple members of the Arizona State coaching staff reported that Pierce held considerable power within the program, and failure to follow his directives could result in job loss. This created a culture of compliance with his actions, despite their unethical nature.

Adding to his troubles, Pierce reportedly failed to cooperate with the NCAA’s investigation. He denied involvement in the planning or execution of the improper visits and inducements, despite the findings indicating otherwise. This lack of cooperation further damaged his standing with the NCAA, contributing to the severe nature of the sanctions against him.

Pierce’s coaching career trajectory changed significantly after his time at Arizona State. He joined the Las Vegas Raiders as a linebackers coach in 2022 and was later promoted to interim head coach before earning the full-time role. However, with the NCAA’s decision, Pierce’s future in college football is effectively on hold for the next eight years, solidifying his current focus on coaching at the professional level.
