Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has highlighted Conor Gallagher’s significance as one of Chelsea’s key players ahead of their 2023-24 EFL Cup final clash on Sunday (February 25).
Gallagher, a product of Chelsea’s youth system since 2008, has become an integral part of the team this season. The 24-year-old midfielder has featured in 30 out of 33 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and six assists.
In a press conference before the final, Lijnders discussed three Chelsea players who could impact the game. He explained (via Metro):
“To begin with, we need to analyze their strengths. Enzo Fernández is the linchpin of their game. Despite some instability, they have managed to find their rhythm.
Cole Palmer has emerged as one of their standout performers this season, strengthening their squad.” Praising Gallagher’s leadership qualities and work ethic, Lijnders stated:
“Conor Gallagher is a true leader, versatile in his role as a number 10 and not afraid to do the dirty work. Their ability to play between the lines with technical precision poses a challenge, especially with their pace upfront. We must be prepared to defend both boxes effectively, particularly when they break through our counter-press.”
Gallagher, whose contract expires in June 2025, has featured in both of Chelsea’s Premier League encounters against Liverpool this season. In the August fixture, he played the full 90 minutes as a defensive midfielder in a 1-1 draw, while in the subsequent match at Anfield, he started as an attacking midfielder in a 4-1 defeat.
