Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Tyrone Taylor hit home runs off Gerrit Cole, with Lindor adding another three-run shot against the bullpen as the New York Mets dominated the Yankees 12-3 on Wednesday night. This victory completed their first season sweep of the Subway Series since 2013.
Lindor hit a two-run homer from the left side against Cole and then connected for a solo shot from the right side off Caleb Ferguson, driving in a season-high five RBIs. It was Lindor’s 18th multi-homer game, and his third this season, bringing his total to 21 homers and 60 RBIs.
Mark Vientos also homered against Tim Hill in a five-run eighth inning, marking the third time in five games that the Yankees allowed four or more home runs.
The Mets finished the season 4-0 against the Yankees, matching their sweep from 2013, and outscored them 36-14 in total. This strong performance came after a slow start, with the Mets improving to 29-13 following a challenging beginning at 24-35.
“It feels great to win. Winning is what we love,” Lindor expressed. “The atmosphere is completely different now compared to when we were losing.
We know we have a talented team with great players and great personalities in this clubhouse, and we’re all playing together.”
The Yankees, who started the season strongly at 50-22, have struggled recently with a 10-22 record since then. They have also struggled in series matchups, going 1-8-2 in their last 11 series after beginning the season 17-3-2.
July has been particularly tough, as they’ve given up 34 home runs in just 18 games this month, including allowing five homers in a game for the first time in two years.
“We’re really taking a beating,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his frustration in a postgame conference, using strong language to describe their current struggles. He acknowledged their difficulties in key situations, with the team going 4 for 36 with runners in scoring position against the Mets this year.
“We can’t make excuses or point fingers,” Aaron Judge commented. “It comes down to what we’re doing on the field, and right now, it’s not up to our usual standards.”
