Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slot kicked off with a 2-0 win against promoted Ipswich on Saturday, with Mohamed Salah scoring the second goal to set a Premier League scoring record.

Salah scored from close range in the 65th minute, bringing his total number of goals in the first round of a Premier League season to nine. This achievement broke a tie he had with soccer legends Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer, and Frank Lampard.

Earlier, Salah assisted Diogo Jota in scoring the first goal as Liverpool improved their performance after a slow start in their first competitive game under Slot, who took over from longtime manager Jurgen Klopp during the offseason.

While Liverpool, along with Manchester United, which won 1-0 against Fulham on Friday, had a strong start to the season, Ipswich faced an early challenge.

Ipswich’s famous supporter, pop star Ed Sheeran, was cheering from a VIP box at Portman Road.

This is Ipswich’s first season back in the top flight since 2002, and the team’s open style of play promises excitement, even if it leads to conceding a lot of goals.

There were five more matches later on Saturday, including Arsenal, who were runners-up in the past two seasons, hosting Wolverhampton.

Reigning champion Manchester City will start its title defense at Chelsea on Sunday.
