The Los Angeles Chargers added Eli Apple to their practice squad on Monday after facing several injuries at cornerback.
Apple was picked 10th overall by the New York Giants in 2016, making this his sixth team. Last season, he played for the Miami Dolphins after spending two years with the Cincinnati Bengals. He has also been with the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers.
In eight seasons, he has played in 98 games and started 82 of them. He has six interceptions, defended 60 passes, and made 381 tackles.
The Chargers (3-2) put starting cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. on injured reserve last Saturday after he hurt his shoulder in practice on Thursday. Their other starter, Kristian Fulton, pulled a hamstring during the third quarter of Sunday’s 23-16 win against Denver.
Backup Ja’Sir Taylor has been inactive for the second game in a row due to a leg injury, and Deane Leonard, who mainly plays on special teams, also hurt his hamstring during the game against Denver.
Rookies Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still, both picked in the fifth round of this year’s NFL draft, did well in their first extensive playing time. Hart was on the field for all 55 defensive plays, while Still participated in 50 snaps.
